Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana PalaceCopacabana Palace

Since opening in 1923 this hotel has become a landmark in Rio. Orient Express now own the hotel and maintain the character, luxury and elegance expected from this hotel. It still receives the rich and famous as guests. Being a large hotel, there is quite a variety of room categories, and even within each category rooms can vary in size and view. However, all rooms are beautifully and tastefully decorated with classic touches and modern additions such as iPod docks. The two restaurants at the hotel are two of Rios best. There is an outdoor pool, fitness centre and spa.

This modern and beautifully Philippe Starck designed hotel on Ipanema Beach attracts celebrities from all over the World. All 79 rooms and 10 suites feature a balconies and the oceanfront rooms have unbeatable views. The rooftop has an infinity pool, a gym and spa. There is a restaurant (open to the public) and has an excellent reputation.

Sofitel Rio de JaneiroSofitel Rio de Janeiro

Between Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, this hotel is in a great location for exploring. All rooms have a private terrace with views to either the city or the beach. The hotel has 4 restaurants, offering International, French and Gourmet. There are also 3 bars, pools and spa.

Das CataratasDas Cataratas

One of only two hotels within the protected National Park area of the falls (the other being the Sheraton on the Argentine side of the falls), the Orient Express owned Das Cataratas Hotel is a pink-washed colonial style building. Although the hotel is right next to the Falls, very few rooms have what one could term a 'falls view', the other rooms have jungle or garden views. There is a pool, bar and 2 restaurants. The location is unbeatable.

Pousada PicinguabaPousada Picinguaba

Around 4 hours drive from Rio on the green coast this charming pousada is on the edge of a quiet fishing village with beautiful views. With only 10 rooms, each with private terrace and hammocks, the pousada has a simple feel to it, yet full of character with Brazilian artwork and luscious flowers. The pousada is 30km from Paraty and the only hotel in the state park of Serra do Mar. There are many activities to be done in the area including kayaking, walking trails, visit Paraty, take a schooner trip, riding and even surfing.

Pousada Rio MutumPousada Rio Mutum

This lodge is accessed by flight to Cuiaba, in the northern Pantanal and then a road journey of around 3 hours to the lodge. Some of the journey is on dusty roads and may take longer in the wet season or if you spot a lot of wildlife while travelling. There are 22 rooms with private bathrooms, terrace and hammocks. Excursions tend to be by boat, canoe, horseback, jeep or on foot. It really depends on the weather and your interests. The lodge grounds have some nice spots to sit and relax but in wet season the nearby river does rise to almost the level of the lodge. You are likely to see capybara, various birds and perhaps giant river otters and tapir if you are lucky!
