Join a local, experienced guide, to trek in remote areas of the North West of Argentina, viewing small villages in hidden valleys and meeting local and friendly people. Altitude is 2,000ft/4,000m. The scenery is spectacular!

Day 1 | Arrival in Salta
Meeting at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure.

iruyaDay 2 | Drive Salta - Iruya

Morning departure for a drive along a winding mountain road, viewing the exuberant, subtropical vegetation and multicolored birds. We drive into the historic and fantastic Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca canyon). In Humahuaca, the splendor of the landscape and the presence of aboriginal ruins leave their long lasting tracks in our souls. We resume our trip and, in Iturbe, start our way up toward Abra Condor (Condor Pass - 4000m) where we can feel the pre-puna (the High Andean plateau). In the afternoon we arrive at Iruya, the small village at the top of the mountains and overlooking the valleys. Its population with a strong mixture of the mestizo and the local coya, still keeps its ancient traditions, as well as very particular religious celebrations.

Today we hike along the Sierra El Astillero. We will follow narrow paths up the mountain slope, beside cliffs, crossing rivers and streams. Our trail winds, at times up the cracks or passes, or down to the river bed. We walk into a transversal valley, whose inhabitants join the ancestral rituals and costumes with Christian practices.
During the hike, we will have the chance to see the vestiges of ancient native civilizations and encounter local people who use this path as part of their everyday live. The landscape, the trail and the beauty of the place is an overwhelming sight.

Accommodation in a comfortable mountain refuge – Refugio Condor (3050m) - located in a high cliff with a panoramic view over the valleys. Running water and toilet facilities. (B - Box-Lunch - D)

Day 4 | Trekking Iruya
Enjoy trekking around the area. Overnight at Refugio Condor. (B - Box Lunch - D)

Day 5 | Trekking to Iruya
We return to Iruya on a different mountain road. More photo opportunities and breathtaking sights await us.

grande salinasDay 6 | Drive Iruya - Great Salt Flats - Purmamarca - Salta
Morning departure from the Silent Valleys to one of the highest places on earth – the Puna or High Andean Plateau. The multi-hued canyon walls serve as a backdrop for the lively, indigenous people. Visit several charming villages known for their small churches and varied architectural styles. You will visit the Great Salt Flats. Drive to the charming village of Purmamarca through a very panoramic winding road. Late evening arrival in Salta. (B,L)

Day 7 | Departure from Salta
Transfer to the airport for your home bound flight or extend your stay to explore more of the Salta area. (B)
