Amazon Rainforest Lodges:
KAPAWI ECOLODGE
Departs: Monday and Friday
Completed in 1996, Kapawi Eco-lodge is the most remote of the jungle lodges we offer in Ecuador. It is located on the shore of Kapawi Lake, in the most remote area of the Ecuadorian Amazon basin. This fascinating area is home to the Achuar, the last indigenous group in the Ecuadorian rainforest to remain isolated until the 1970s. Accessible only by small aircraft, Kapawi offers programs suitable for all nature enthusiasts. This is an excellent and adventurous program combining the nature of the rainforest with the culture of the Achuar community. Kapawi is the place of magic, full of legends, myths, and wildlife.
Activities:
Easy - Include short hikes (up to 3 hours) on well defined trails, visits to the Achuar communities , as well as trips in canoes. Overnight in the lodge or in tents.
Moderate - Include medium-distance hikes (up to 5 hours) sometimes crossing flooded areas. Overnight in the lodge, the Achuar communities, and tents.
Difficult - demanding hikes of many hours or days on poorly defined and often flooded trails. Porters carry food and supplies. Trips down inaccessible rivers are done on inflatable rafts. Excellent physical condition is required.
Accommodations:
Guests are accommodated in 20 double guest rooms, with private washroom and sun-heated shower. Each room has a wide terrace, where you can observe ducks, hummingbirds, egrets, parrots, or listen to the myriad of frogs at night.
"Kapawi was a very interesting experience. We learned a lot about the rainforest, and managed to see a few monkeys, caimans, dolphins, and lots of different kinds of birds. We were very impressed with our 2 guides - they ran a fantastic program, and were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Food was also fantastic. I particularly liked the local pepper, so much that I bought some for home." C. Kennedy (Oct 01)
