INTRODUCTION TO EL CALAFATE

One of the most beautiful landscapes in the Western Hemisphere is found in the Patagonian Andes. For this reason a chain of Argentine and Chilean National Parks protects this natural beauty. Numerous lakes fed by glacial run-off reflect the majesty of the snow-capped peaks. The mountainsides are covered by primeval forests of subantarctic beech trees many of which change color spectacularly in autumn.

Surrounded by this magnificent vegetation are the immense glaciers, most likely the highlight of any trip to this region. Between the 48 and 51 South parallels, the Andes Range is covered by a large extension of permafrost known as the Patagonian continental icecap, which stretches for 560 miles from north to south. So large it is, that it is also called “The Third Pole” after its huge concentration of ice. It is the origin of 47 major glaciers, such as the famous Perito Moreno glacier. But it is also known all over the world for its dramatic steppe at the foot of the imposing Fitz Roy and Torre Mountains, a “mecca” for climbers from all over the world. These areas allow for hiking, trekking, horseriding, overlanding and overnight in remote and isolated estancias by turquoise lakes.

Day 1 | Arrive in El Calafate

Day 2 | Activities at Helsingfors
Day to enjoy the activities at the estancia.

After arriving to the Hostería, the guide will organize the activities during your stay. You'll have options for hiking, boat navigations and horseback riding. Excursion options include:

• Trekking or horseback riding to the Blue Lagoon
• Navigation to Viedma Glacier
• Navigation or trekking to Laguna del Morro
• Horseback riding and trekking to Estancia Los Hermonos

Day 3 | Helsingfors - Casa Los Sauces
Transfer from Helsingfors to Casa Los Sauces. In the afternoon you will visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. Transfer from the hotel to Los Glaciares National Park, in the sub-Antarctic Continental Ice-cape, which extends over 60,000 sq. km (23,000 sq. miles) along the Patagonian Andes.

The excursion begins in the pier located at “Bajo de las Sombras” Bay (approximately 6 km before the glacier viewpoint), where you will embark to cross Brazo Rico. After a 20 minute navigation disembark and begin a 20 minute mini trek to the viewpoint. Once you are in front of the glacier, the guides will provide special footwear and instructions for the 2-hour hike over the ice. During this mini trekking over the glacier, you will appreciate lots of ice formations such as: cracks, drains, little lagoons, etc.

It is a moderate hike and the ice surface where you will walk is irregular, but firm and safe. At the end of the hike, you will go back to the shelter walking through the exuberant Magellan forest. Arrival and embark to cross the lake. Once you arrive at the pier, you will travel for 6 km to reach the catwalks, in front of the Perito Moreno glacier, from where you will have different and amazing views of it.

Day 4 | Estancia Cristina
Early morning transfer to the tiny port of Puerto Bandera, where you will board a comfortable modern catamaran for a cruise on Lago Argentino. The navigation first stops in front of the Upsala Glacier before entering the Channel leading to Estancia Cristina.

Upon arrival at the Estancia, the program begins with a delicious and traditional Patagonia lunch in the restaurant, which has been built on the base of an old wool drying spot.

Once in the Estancia visitors can choose between 2 different programs. One involves a relaxed afternoon around the Estancia and another one includes a beautiful hike to a nearby mountain. Another alternative is to reach a panoramic point by hiking to the Carnero Mountain. From there we can admire the mountain chain and its glaciers. The activity includes a lunch box.

Day 5 | Depart El Calafate
Transfer from the hotel to the airport to board your flight. (B)
